Solo Leveling Web Novel Review: The Thrill of Getting Stronger
Hi, it’s Min. If you’re looking for a novel to get absorbed in over the weekend, Solo Leveling is an easy recommendation from me.
I went in wondering whether it would be another familiar hunter story. Before long, I was staying up far too late and paying for the next installment because I wanted to keep reading. I completely lost track of time.
This review covers Chugong’s original prose web novel.
Spoiler level: Light ability spoilers. I mention Jinwoo’s shadow-based powers and army, alongside the opening premise and general storytelling style. I don’t explain how he gains those powers, reveal later identities, or discuss major outcomes or the ending.
Content note: Fantasy violence, threatening monsters, and dangerous dungeon encounters.

My Short Verdict
I loved it. Jinwoo’s growth gave me exactly the kind of cathartic excitement that makes the next chapter very difficult to resist.
What sounded familiar at first became wonderfully absorbing for me. The pleasure was in following a vulnerable E-rank hunter as his possibilities kept expanding.
I could understand the enthusiasm around the novel once that momentum had pulled me in. If a satisfying climb toward extraordinary power is what you’re after, this is one I’d strongly recommend.
The Growth That Kept Me Reading
Sung Jinwoo’s progression was easily my favorite part.
He begins in such a weak position that every improvement has something clear to push against. As his capabilities grow, the contrast with that beginning becomes a huge part of the enjoyment.
I didn’t find that process tedious. I wanted to see the next step, the next challenge, and what he would be able to do with the abilities he had gained.
For me, being a power fantasy didn’t mean the story lost all its tension. Its dangerous world and the rules around Jinwoo’s progress gave me enough to stay invested as well as excited.
The appeal wasn’t simply arriving at a point where he could overpower someone. I enjoyed following the movement toward it.
Why the Game System Worked for Me
The quests, rewards, and levels made that movement especially easy to follow.
Finishing a challenge meant the possibility of something new, which gave the reading a familiar, game-like rhythm. At times, I almost felt like the player making progress myself.
That was the kind of vicarious satisfaction I loved here. Even in prose, I could picture the change in Jinwoo’s capabilities and keep track of what each new step meant.
For me, this is where the game’s structure became more than decoration. It made growth feel tangible and gave me another reason to want the next installment.
The Shadow Powers Were a Highlight
Jinwoo’s shadow-based forces were one of the features that made the novel especially memorable to me.
The idea of commanding an army gave the power fantasy a particular kind of grandeur. The moments when he called those forces into action made me want to cheer.
I also liked how stylish the shadow theme felt. Something that could have come across as purely grim instead became a huge source of excitement for me.
That combination of dark imagery and a commanding presence gave this part of his growth a special appeal for me.
Where I Wanted More From the Supporting Cast
My main reservation was what happened to the balance of attention as Jinwoo became more overwhelmingly capable.
Some supporting characters who had interested me earlier seemed to move further into the background. I would have liked more room for them.
At the same time, I enjoyed how firmly the novel committed to its central figure. The focus helped deliver the exhilarating one-person show I had come to read.
Those feelings can sit together. I liked the emphasis on Jinwoo, and I still noticed the characters I wanted more from.
If your favorite stories give several people equally substantial journeys, this is a real limitation to consider. Enjoying the lead’s growth won’t necessarily replace the ensemble you were hoping for.
Who I’d Recommend It To
I’d put this high on your list if you enjoy game-like progression, increasingly powerful protagonists, and action fantasy that gives you a strong sense of forward movement.
It’s especially easy for me to recommend when you want the satisfaction of seeing someone push past the limits that once defined them.
If you’re looking for a large cast growing together through constant interaction, the concentrated focus on Jinwoo may be less suited to your taste.
For a cozy weekend reading session with a warm blanket and a few mandarins nearby, this is a novel I’d happily suggest. Just choose it because that kind of power fantasy sounds fun to you. It certainly worked for me.
Where to Read the Original Novel
For English prose, Yen Press’s Solo Leveling, Volume 1 (novel) is an official starting point, available in paperback and digital editions under the Yen On imprint. The page credits Chugong as the author.
For the original Korean web novel, check the official KakaoPage listing. Availability and access requirements depend on the service and your location.
If you encounter older Tapas reading links, check its closure notice and FAQ first. Service is scheduled to end on March 31, 2027; new Ink acquisition has stopped, and previously unlocked content will become inaccessible after closure.
The Solo Leveling introduction separates the story’s main formats. For editions and the place of additional material and the sequel, use the reading-order guide; it names the sequel’s next-generation protagonist, so save that section for later if you want to avoid knowing anything beyond the original.
