True Beauty Webtoon Review: Makeup, Mirrors, and Feeling Seen

By Published Updated

Hi, it’s Min. For a while, True Beauty was a webtoon I kept cutting into my sleep to read. I’ve wanted to put those thoughts together.

This review is about Yaongyi’s original webtoon.

Spoiler level: The makeup premise, broad character impressions, artwork, reading pace, and my mixed response to beauty standards. No later romantic choices, relationship outcomes, or ending details.

My Short Verdict: The Expressions Kept Me Reading

I enjoyed it. It left me feeling a little softer than I expected.

I began thinking this would be a light story about becoming pretty through makeup. That sounded easy enough to enjoy without asking much of it.

Then I noticed that I was paying more attention to the heroine’s expressions than to her face itself. There was more going on inside the story than I had expected.

It wasn’t a succession of startling twists. The pleasure was in becoming interested in how these people felt, and wanting to stay with them a little longer.

Jugyeong and the Morning Mirror

The morning mirror panels stayed with me longest.

I read Jugyeong’s face as the face of someone worrying about being found out. Even after the makeup was finished, she didn’t look entirely satisfied with what she had achieved. To me, she looked as though she was hoping to get through another day safely.

That made my heart sink a little. I could recognize something of myself there.

In high school, the state of my bangs could change the mood of my whole day. Remembering that made these panels feel uncomfortably close. Her worry reached me through an ordinary face in front of a mirror, rather than needing a large event to explain it.

Suho’s Few Words and Seojun’s Changing Smile

Suho can seem cold and quiet. I liked that his way of offering comfort didn’t depend on a long speech.

I came to see him as someone who could simply stay beside another person. Those small attitudes made my heart beat faster than a grand romantic gesture would have. There was something reassuring about company that didn’t need to fill every silence.

Seojun made a different impression. His brightness and directness initially had me thinking he would be a fairly light character.

Then there were the moments when the smile left his face. That small opening made him feel less simple to me. I wanted to look again at the person behind the easy manner.

Color, Clothes, and a Face Without Makeup

Yaongyi’s colors are beautiful. I enjoyed the shine of the hair and the attention to the texture of clothing.

The contrast between an unmade-up face and the same face with makeup was fun to follow through the panels. A change in appearance could change the whole atmosphere around that person.

It also gave me another reason to pay attention to the expression underneath. The pretty details drew my eye, while the worry or hesitation on a face kept it there.

And yes, I looked up lip-tint shades more than once while reading. I can’t have been the only one tempted by those colors.

Feeling Her Worry While Admiring the Makeup

My concern for Jugyeong didn’t make the pretty details less appealing. I could worry about her being found out and still want to know the lip-tint shade. Sympathy and attraction arrived together.

That appeal also helped me understand why the finished face mattered so much to her. I read makeup as a kind of protection: a way to step into other people’s attention with a little more safety. Enjoying the transformation made the fear of losing that protection easier for me to understand.

At the same time, I could catch myself looking at my own reflection more critically. I was moved by her anxiety about being judged, while admiring the polished image that seemed to offer her relief. The beautiful artwork could draw me toward the same standard I was worrying about on her behalf.

That coexistence felt familiar to me. I could think judgment based on appearance was unfair and still be attracted to the clothes, colors, and makeup. Recognizing that contradiction gave the story a particular sense of reality for me. Those feelings made me look more closely at my own response as I read.

The romance leaves me thinking about what I accept when I enjoy a transformation. I can wish Jugyeong didn’t have to hide and still admire the look that helps her feel protected. That tension gave me another reason to stay with the person behind the finished face.

The School Memories It Brought Back

The webtoon’s school atmosphere felt familiar: lip tint being passed around during breaks, and casual conversations about appearance in the corridors.

It reminded me of my own student days.

That recognition made the surroundings easy for me to settle into. The mirror worry and those casual conversations belonged together in my response: something that sounds small from outside can take up a surprising amount of space in a school day.

Where the Story Began to Repeat

Over the long run, some of the emotional developments began to feel familiar. A misunderstanding would arise, clear up, and make room for another flutter of feeling.

After a few returns to that rhythm, I moved through certain stretches a little more lightly, almost as though I were letting the story catch its breath.

Some supporting characters’ circumstances also passed in only a panel or two. I wanted a little more time with them.

Those disappointments didn’t make me lose sight of where the story was going. They were closer to wanting more from it than wanting to put it down.

What Stayed With Me, and Who I’d Recommend It To

For me, the question of how to let other people see you sat at the center, even within the romance.

I didn’t feel hurried toward getting over worries about appearance. The story felt willing to sit beside those worries for a while. That was the part that made it feel different to me from other school romances.

I’d first suggest it to someone who remembers spending a long time in front of a mirror during their school years. It may also suit you if you like sweet romance, or want something light after work that leaves a little warmth behind.

If you want quick developments, intricate foreshadowing, or a complicated fictional system, its pace may feel leisurely. If love triangles are already wearing you out, that part may test your patience too.

Where to Read and Begin

For the comic in English, open Episode 0 on the official WEBTOON edition. The Korean original is on Naver WEBTOON. Check your edition’s current episode access.

The True Beauty introduction introduces Yaongyi and the work’s different formats. The starting guide explains the English Episode 0 label, Korean prologue, and official reading routes.

If looking in the mirror has felt difficult lately, I’d suggest opening just the first installment. There may be more comfort there than the pretty faces first suggest.
